To capitalize on the excellent response and national airplay (Triple RRR, PBS, ABC , Nova, and community radio) that his latest CD "Prague Radio" is getting, Brian Baker has put together a hot band to get out on the road and bring these great songs to a live audience. The band launched "Prague Radio" at the Rainbow Hotel in Fitzroy on Friday August 26th, and filmed the night for a live DVD.
"Prague Radio" is being distributed in Australia by MGM Distribution and is available in the United States through Paste Music and Not Lame Recordings. It's also available on the net through CD Baby and many of the digital distributors, including Apple iTunes and Rhapsody.
The band - "The Spoils of the Empire" are made up of some very talented and experienced musicians, and features Brian's daughter Ella on backing vocals. They play all the songs from "Prague Radio" and include in their set list songs from Brian's large back catalogue, particularly tracks from The Makers, a band that Brian was in during the nineties, with former Split Enz keyboard player Eddie Rayner, and Michael Barker, currently drummer with The John Butler Trio.
Brian Baker and the Spoils of the Empire having been wowing crowds around Melbourne, playing supports for Renee Geyer and James Reyne, and headlining at their CD launch at the Rainbow Hotel in Fitzroy. Mike Rudd from Spectrum has been coming along to a few gigs and says this about the band - "I'm hypnotized by the interaction between Brian and his daughter Ella. They not only harmonize vocally, their movements are perfectly in harmony too. They are far more a duet live than on record, where Brian is the sole focus, and Ella is a seductive visual complement to Brian's more ascetic, (while cheerful), demeanor." Other comments from members of the audience include -"a cross between Paul Kelly and Crowded House".
Check out the bios from the individual band members and you can see why this act will be a "must see". More info on Brian here.

Band members:
Fallon Williams:
Drums, vocals, percussion:
Since moving out to Australia while on tour with Steve Marriott and Humble Pie in the eighties, this great drummer and singer has been rocking crowds with his taste and attitude, including playing with iconic Melbourne bands Vanettas Taxi, and Relax with Max.
Mark Smith: Electric, acoustic, slide, resonator, lap
steel guitars, vocals:
From the original "Rueben Tice", the legendary Melbourne breeding ground for members of Skyhooks and other acts, to the Torpedo's, Primal Tears and session work, then more recently with Normie Rowe and Johnny Young in the Legends of Rock. 30 years of adventures in the Australian music industry means this man can play the guitar with a subtlety that eludes many less experienced players.
Ella Baker: Vocals, percussion:
Brian's
daughter, grown up listening and living her Dad's music. Now at the tender age
of 17 she's ready to steal some of the spotlight from her old man. So when the
two of them sing up a storm together, you're really seeing something special.
Quotes from the greats - Brian Baker is without doubt one of the best and most inventive "undiscovered" Australasian singer/songwriters I have heard. - John MacDonald, Fable Music.
"I could've produced "Prague Radio" so much better, why is Brian such an idiot in these matters, and so, so many others? If he'd listened to me in the first place he wouldn't need to ask me for quotes to bolster his fragile ego." - Eddie Rayner.
